Bloodstock Open Air utilised Midas products across its stages. From the HD96 to the legendary M32 and Pro Series, these consoles transformed the Main Stage, Metal to the Masses Stage, and EMP Stage.
On the Main Stage the audio production team, led by Mark Ellis and Adi Billinge for Stage Audio Services (owned by Kevin Moberly), pulled out all the stops. Two Midas HD96-24 consoles handled the Front of House (FOH), while a PRO1 managed playback and served as the shout system, ensuring flawless communication between engineers. The set-up was chosen for its ease of use, great sound, and streamlined workflow, simplifying the process for visiting engineers.
“We aim to keep things simple for guest engineers so they can hit the ground running,” explained Ellis. Key instruments like drums, guitars, and vocals were grouped using VCAs (Voltage Controlled Amplifiers) for quick access, while a shout system kept FOH and monitors perfectly in sync.
“The beauty of Midas is that everything is right at your fingertips,” Ellis added. With effects control buttons programmed for instant access and a responsive graphic EQ applied across the L&R channels, Midas consoles created a smooth and intuitive mixing environment.
Bloodstock’s fast-paced schedule posed its own challenges, with some band changeovers as tight as 20 minutes. To keep things moving, the sound crew employed two separate line systems, each linked to its own FOH and monitor desk. This meant the next band could line-check while the current band was still playing, slashing downtime between acts and keeping the energy high.
“In the early part of the day, we’ve only got 20 minutes between sets,” the team noted. “We unplug one band, roll them back, roll the next band on, and we’re ready to go.”
Staging an outdoor festival during the unpredictable UK summer brings its own challenges. But Midas consoles performed through rain, wind, blazing sunshine, and extreme heat. “No matter the conditions, Midas gives visiting engineers the best possible head start with top-tier gear and service,” added the FOH team.
The team have been long-time Midas users and Bloodstock’s engineers were full of praise for the Heritage D Series, citing its superior sound quality and user-friendly design. “I’ve always been a Midas fan,” said Ellis, recalling his days with the XL4 and PRO Series. “The HD96 is no exception—fantastic sound, effects, and a workflow that’s digital but feels like analogue.”
