AB lights the way for Gabrielė Vilkickytė

Lighting Designer, Arvydas ‘AB Light’ Buinauskas reflects on a recent live production for Gabrielė Vilkickytė

Design studio, AB Light boasts a diverse portfolio of projects – from illuminating live concerts to nature sites and buildings throughout Lithuania. Speaking exclusively to TPi, Lighting Designer, Arvydas ‘ABLight’ Buinauskas reflects curating the visuals for Gabrielė Vilkickytė’s first live show as a self-managed, independent artist.

When were you first approached to work on this project with Gabrielė Vilkickytė and what was the initial brief from the end client?

“This was the first time I have collaborated with Gabrielė Vilkickytė. Gabrielė wanted the concert to be held in the retro and nostalgic setting of Vilnius University Hall. It was our job to develop a concept for the show and curate the scenography.”

What challenges did you and the team face, and how did you overcome them?

“Vilnius University is not very compatible with live concerts. It is typically only used for conferences and lectures. Our biggest challenge was collecting the sheer amount of plants required for the scenography and transporting them into the University Hall, which was located on the third floor of the historic building, deep inside the halls of the University. The best thing about this location was that it was recently renovated with a new set of lighting equipment, featuring Claypaky lighting fixtures, which matched perfectly with our desired concept and operation of the show.”

It seems like the main goal was to create a ‘cosiness’ within the set design. How did you achieve this?

“The concept was created for this one show, which was special. It was Gabrielė Vilkickytė’s first show as a self-managed, independent artist, so we wanted to create something new and exciting. The music and scenography was a match made in heaven.”
