Creative Technology (CT) were honoured to support delivery of Prince William’s first-ever Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, which took place at London’s Alexandra Palace.
The event was introduced by HRH Prince William and hosted by Clara Amfo and Dermot O’Leary with Sir David Attenborough joining as a very special guest.
The ceremony featured performances from Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, KSI and Yemi Alade, and Shawn Mendes. Coldplay’s performance, from outside of Alexandra Palace, used energy powered by 60 cyclists.
Working for long-standing client BBC Studios Events alongside The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, CT provided a circular, gloss LED floor to the exact design specified by the client.
The high-resolution LED floor which was made up of 446 tiles of ROE Black Marble gloss finish also featured a catwalk and was fed into by two 4k signals. To further build up the stage, CT supplied a 12m by 7.2m screen to display winner VTs and announcements with an additional 3m by 2.4m screen in the lobby for the presenters.
Creative Technology UK Project Manager, Paul Seeger commented: “It was an absolute privilege to work on an event of such a meaningful and relevant cause. Not only did the ceremony look amazing for the live audience in the palace but the use of dynamic camera angles made for some impressive footage for the audience watching on the screens and at home.”
Following on from the main event, CT was on-hand to deliver the video and audio for the green carpet event in the foyer with an LED screen and multiple TVs to display the feed. The feed was taken and sent to a specified BBC platform for people around the world who otherwise would not be able to access the livestream.
After the show in a separate room a secure Zoom call was set up between each of the Earthshot Prize award winners and The Duke and Duchess so that they could congratulate them on their hard work and achievements.
BBC Events Creative Director, Claire Popplewell commented: “The show was modern, surprising, beautiful, immensely risky and creative, and was just perfect. Actually, it was better than that, it was breath-taking. It is true to say that over the past couple of years we have, together, redefined the quality, creativity and expectations of live televised national and international events and set the bar unbelievably high; and the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony set the bar another notch higher.”
